AUCKLAND NIGHTLIFE

Auckland Nightlife - The best way to find out what’s going on in terms of nightlife is to go through the New Zealand Herald. If you are looking for music information, the monthly Real Groove, is available from most record store and magazine shops, and it will give all the information you need. For the latest information on nightclubs get What's On Auckland, this you can pick up at all visitor information bureaus. Metro magazine can also be helpful.

Travel Guide

New Zealand produces plenty of bands and you should be able to find some quality local acts in a club or venue. Auckland's arts scene is picking up, and on any night of the week there should be a choice of a couple of plays, comedy and maybe some dance or opera.

The distinction between eating and drinking places is blurred, with cafés, restaurants and bars all supplying alcohol. Some bars also serve food. Drinking hours are almost unlimited and you will find places serving alcohol round the clock. The exception is in Auckland's former dry areas, mainly Grey Lynn, which borders Ponsonby, and Mount Eden. Both gave up their dry status recently, but there are no pubs, and even licensed restaurants are scarce. The area around the junction of Vulcan Lane and High Street contains some clubs but there is a greater number along Karangahape Road. Few clubs charge admission.

There is a variety of cafes and restaurants in Auckland to cater for all tastes. Fresh fish and shellfish, lamb, milk, cheese and vegetables, combine for a simple and more sophisticated cooking.
